Is a starter strip necessary?

Wondering why plinth profiles are used? It is an element that is not always appreciated when planning the insulation of buildings. However, the benefits of its use definitely speak in favour of investing in its purchase and remembering to install it. The execution of the house insulation will then be durable and solid and will gain an aesthetic appearance. Most importantly, however starter strips provide a number of advantages that will have a positive impact on the strength and resistance of the lower insulation layer. What are the advantages of skirting boards? What is a skirting board and is it worth using? We answer these questions later in this article.

What is a starter strip?

Skirting boards (also known as plinth profiles) are components made of aluminium or PVC that serve as lower base for the first layer of polystyrene boards or mineral wool on the outer layer of the building. They are available in 2m and 2.5m lengths. The special profile of the skirting board allows it to be placed on a levelled, cleaned and dry base (usually the foundation wall) and polystyrene boards to be placed directly on it.

Why do we need a starter strip?

Plinth profiles make building work easier and faster. They also have many advantages for the quality of the insulation and the subsequent operation and durability of the building. Why use a starter strip?

  • Protects against moisture - The specially shaped drip cap prevents rainwater from running off, so that it does not collect in hard-to-reach places and does not cause dampness.
  • Protects the lower layer of insulation - This layer is prone to deterioration, which is why a skirting board made of a durable material (aluminium or PVC sheet) provides a barrier that prevents access by rodents or insects, for example.
  • Facilitates the leading out of the first insulation layer - It provides a secure base on which the first polystyrene boards or mineral wool are installed. A well-leveled skirting board makes it easier to level and eliminate gaps from the individual elements of the insulation system.
  • Prevents cold air from penetrating under the panels - The plinth skirting board also acts as a barrier to cold air, which can more easily penetrate beneath the insulation layer. This avoids condensation in this area and minimises heat loss in the building.

How to choose a plinth profile well?

In order for a skirting board to fulfil all of these functions, it must be suitable for our building and the type of insulation. We can choose from aluminium slats or made of plastic (PVC) with a fibreglass mesh attached to one of the edges. During installation, the mesh is embedded in the adhesive layer. Choosing an aluminium skirting board we need to adjust its width to the thickness of the chosen thermal insulation layer (polystyrene or wool).

Starter strips are a product valued by contractors for the ease of working with the insulation system. Building owners recognise the need for their for the safety and protection of the thermal insulation layer. If you want durable and long-lasting insulation for your home, the plinth profile will be the ideal base from which to begin its installation. This will give us peace of mind for many years.
