Window trims - what are they for, why are they so important and how do you choose the best ones?

When installing windows, it is easy to forget simple but extremely important steps. One of them is the use of skirting boards. Although this is now almost becoming standard, not all contractors are convinced of the validity of their use. However, bearing in mind that window joinery plays a key role in our homes, influencing both thermal comfort and interior aesthetics, it is worth looking at the role of window profiles. They affect the proper functioning of windows, but also have an important aesthetic and decorative function. In this article, we present the functions of window sills, describe why they are so important and suggest how to choose the best ones.

Window trims - what are they and what are they used for?

Window mouldings and profiles and eaves it's elements mounted around window frames. They can be used on both the outside and the inside. This dual use further strengthens their function. The main task of the profiles is functional finishing of a window openingbut also maintaining the aesthetic and elegant appearance of the window. This is because the mouldings are mainly installed on the perimeter of the window, hiding the joints between the window and the wall. They can be made of various materials, e.g. aluminium, steel or PVC. The correct installation of profiles is of particular importance for their proper functioning and determines the effectiveness of all their functions.

What are the functions of skirting boards?

The most important tasks of the window profiles are:

  • Aesthetic finish - The mouldings are an element that adds elegance to the entire window frame. To make this effect even more subtle, a wide variety of colours are now available. They can be matched to the shades of the window frames. In addition to the standard white slats, there are also colours such as brown, graphite or golden oak.
  • Protection against moisture - The special, profiled design of the slats helps to protect the window against the effects of moisture and rainwater infiltration. This is particularly important for maintaining the longest possible lifespan of window joinery, especially in such harsh weather conditions as we have in our country.
  • Thermal insulation - Well-fitted and installed profiles prevent heat loss from the interior and protect against cold air infiltration from the outside.
  • Protection against cracks in plaster - The fixed slats create expansion joints between the window frame and the masonry. This allows the window to move freely in the plaster, thereby minimising the risk of cracks forming on it.
  • Hiding inequalities - Properly installed window mouldings make it possible to subtly hide possible imperfections within the window area, such as uneven edges or differences in wall level.

How do I choose the best skirting boards?

When deciding on the installation of window profiles, it is worth placing an emphasis on how the highest product quality. The cost of tested and professionally made skirting boards may be higher, but it will certainly pay for itself soon enough, if only in not having to repair cracked plaster or paint damp patches on the façade. Certainly, attention should also be paid to the material of the product. PVC is certainly one of the most popular, but aluminium, for example, is equally valued. It is worth matching the type of skirting board to our needs, but also to the construction of the window joinery. We can choose between Window slats with gasket (which protects the window frames and foam from contamination during plastering work), or Window slats with mesh (which is connected to the profile ultrasonically and allows an easier and extremely durable connection to the plaster and mounting adhesive). Finally, all you need to do is match the colour of the window frame or the colour of the walls, select the appropriate length and width of trim and take care of it, that their installation is carried out by qualified and experienced workers. Then we further increase the likelihood of long and trouble-free use of the entire window system.

Window trims are not only a decorative element, but above all a functional one, influencing the durability and performance of the windows. With the right choice of material, colour and correct installation, their effect and beautiful appearance will be enjoyed for many years to come.
